Keeping Hydrated, Use Creativity
Contributed By: Caregiver Minny
Dehydration is an issue among many seniors for a variety of reasons. These can include not enough liquid intake, as well as the side effects of diabetes, diarrhea and prescribed medications. Another concern is sweating during the heat of summer or due to a thermostat set too high. I find it helps to keep a pitcher of water or iced tea in sight and have a glassful at the ready. If a person in my care is not taking sips, I will "offer" a reminder and my help. For those who resist or lack thirst, I may include high water content fruits and vegetables at mealtime, or even Jello, or a popsicle.
